Life’s journey is a winding road filled with twists, turns, and unexpected challenges. One thing I try to live by is that it’s a marathon, not a race. For me, it’s always felt like a race—a race with myself. I’ve been in constant competition with the person in the mirror, always striving to one-up myself. But figuring out what I truly loved was a journey on its own.
Embracing My Passion
I’ve always had a special place in my heart for math and further math. I wasn’t one who knew exactly what I wanted to do when I was younger, but I knew what I loved—math. It was like a puzzle waiting to be solved, and I thrived in it. While I had my fair share of weaknesses, I learned to focus on my strengths and let them shine.
A Diverse Range of Interests
Life is about more than just one passion. I enjoy different things that make life richer and more colourful. I love fitness and was a fantastic track runner. I find joy in expressing myself through art and drawing. Exploration, adrenaline rushes, good food, and drinks are also among my pleasures, often discovered through traveling and trying out different restaurants.
Perseverance Through Challenges
My journey was far from smooth. In my sophomore year, I lost my scholarship due to some youthful missteps. College life wasn’t always easy; I faced challenges, bullying, and unwarranted gossip within my school’s smaller black community. But I didn’t let these struggles define me. It was difficult, but these different phases of my life were stepping stones, lessons in resilience.
The Power of Mentorship
One thing I’ve come to value deeply is mentorship. During my gap year, I had the opportunity to run after-school programs at a center in Lagos, Nigeria called Afara. Teaching math and further math to those young minds was nothing short of amazing. I’ve ventured into tutoring, provided career advice, reviewed personal statements, and offered university advice and consultation. As a Teaching Assistant, I taught CAD and 3D modeling, and I’ve even helped students prepare for the SAT. Mentorship isn’t just about giving; it’s about growing together.
Empowering the Next Generation
One of my proudest achievements is founding STEM Bridge Incorporated, a non-profit that empowers girls in Nigeria to pursue STEM careers. I’ve seen firsthand the impact of inspiring the next generation. It’s a reminder that each of us can contribute to positive change in our communities and industries. Empowering others is a noble pursuit that multiplies our own success.
This is just a short clip of the bigger movie that is my journey. Remember, life’s journey is yours to navigate. Embrace your passions, endure through challenges, seek mentorship, and uplift those around you.

That’s such a relatable perspective. It’s easy to fall into that mindset of constantly competing with yourself, thinking that the faster you go, the closer you’ll get to “success.” But sometimes, it’s about finding balance and realizing that enjoying the process—whether it’s discovering what you truly love or working through challenges—can be just as fulfilling as the end goal. How did your journey of figuring out what you truly love unfold? Has it changed the way you approach your goals now?
